The End of the visits seen by Gavin

5th Sep. Longshan Group, Xinshan Village.
People have more arable land in average than the other villages that we visited. It is an ethnic village, Miao people is about 85% of the population (about 1000 people). 1/5 of families (100) raise 10-15 goats. 1/2 of the families do not plant tobacco. People do not like going out to make money in the city. There are about 50 persons who are good at building construction. They can make money during the free days. People breed the baby goats and sale the old goats (one 50kg goat costs 1200RMB). People do not make milk from goats and cow. They do not have this eating habit as in France and they also do not know how to take the milk of a cow.

7th Sep. Group 5, Shougong village.
In this village, people make potteries but have just 1 mou to live..
People here have 3 ways to make money.
- To rent land from other villages to plant tobacco.
- Young people going out to make money.
- And to raise pigs (animals) to sell.

We visited one of the families who still cook potteries and we have got more history information of the pottery production in this village. This man is one of the oldest workshops in this village and one of the ten last pottery makers. He told us they believe that this kind of skill will not disappear for the next 20 years, but the market is less and less important. There are 2 main problems :
- cooking ways are old (they use wood and old cooking house very destroyed).
- even if the pottery is better to keep food and make wine, the substitutes of the potteries like plastic plates are useful to eat and are more convenient.
The family said that they would like to revive the pottery production by advanced technology.

8th Sep. Xinshan Group, Xinshan Village.
In this ethnic group, the main crops are corn and potato. They do not plant tobacco because they are on the back of the mountain with not enough sun. They make money from planting walnut trees, beans and raising animals to sale. Fertilizer is their biggest problem as usual.

10th Sep. Yingshan Group, Yingshan Village.
High price of fertilizer is the most difficulty. The road is bad. And the agriculture environment is very bad in Tiechang ethnic group (people live on the slope of a high mountain side). The soil is poor without enough fertilizer.

From these visits, I can tell that peasants here in Niupeng in the mountain area are optimistic. They work hard to live on their fields. They try to live better to make money from the cities. They like the countryside and long hoping to find a way to harmonized with their land.

I like the handworking honest Chinese peasants in NP. Don’t you think so? Welcome to discuss with me if you are interested in.
